A three-step strategy for a Saudi payment gateway

Status Placed 3rd. A competition proposal; nothing was built.

Context

In April 2026, Muslims of Haas and HyperPay, a payment gateway based in Saudi Arabia, asked student teams one question: what should a gateway become once processing turns into a commodity? My entry was called Easy Money.

The proposal

I started from something only a gateway can see. A card network sees its own cards and a buy-now-pay-later company sees its own shoppers, but a gateway sees every payment method at every checkout it runs. I built three steps on that view.

  • Compliance. Generate Saudi Arabia’s required e-invoices at the moment of payment, so staying with the gateway is also how a merchant stays compliant.

  • Checkout data. Help merchants sell more, starting with which payment option to show which shopper.

  • Merchant lending. HyperPay supplies the underwriting data, a licensed bank supplies the money, and repayment comes out of daily settlements.

Proposal. Nothing was built.

First, e-invoices made at the moment of payment, so merchants stay. Second, checkout data that shows each shopper the right payment option, so merchants grow. Third, merchant lending through a licensed bank partner, repaid from daily settlements, so merchants expand. A loop returns to the start: more transactions mean better data.
